Interior Fit-Out for Gloucestershire Recycling and Energy Plant

Posted on 17 December 2019

Pacy & Wheatley are very pleased to share our recent work at Urbaser Balfour Beatty (UBB) power and recycling centre, Gloucester. The project was initially tendered in early 2018 but following several revised tenders, we were asked to attend two interviews on site with the UBB project team. Fortunately, the outcome of our interview was successful, and we were appointed for a six-month contract for the value of £800,000 in June 2018.

UBB Gloucester is a joint venture from Urbaser and Balfour Beatty to sort and manage Gloucestershire's waste as an alternative to going to landfill. They safely deal with waste that cannot be recycled or composted by using it to produce the equivalent electricity to power 25,000 homes as part of Gloucestershire's renewable energy production. The facility diverts 90% of the County Council's waste from landfill, which in turn reduces methane production and produces sustainable aggregates. The centre also boasts a visitor centre, designed to allow schools and community groups to visit and learn more about recycling and energy production.

We began our Interior Fit Out Package of the admin block and visitor areas in August 2018 with a slight delay following construction issues on site. Problems with the shell construction allowed water ingress into the fit-out area, so we had to wait for that to be resolved before our work could start.

Pacy & Wheatley worked closely with UBB to completely waterproof the area on a temporary basis so we could commence work. Our services expanded to include installation of jumbo stud walls, decoration and finishes to three staircases going up four storeys high, and other additional work packages.

We're proud to have completed the interior fit-out in August 2019, in time for our revised completion date. The state-of-the-art power and recycling station is now operating and processing a substantial amount of household waste into energy.

    Nottingham University Hospitals, NHS Trust

Pacy & Wheatley Interiors were contacted in regard to getting involved in an urgent project to completely strip out and refurbish the Southwell Ward at Nottingham City Hospital. The brief to this project was that once commenced, this project needed to be completed in 12 weeks, a very tall undertaking based on the amount of work involved. However, after several meetings, a programme was put together which involved a large portion of the works being carried out on both days and nights, 6 days a week, in order to give all involved the best chance of completing the works to a very challenging timescale. The works undertaken involved the full strip out of the existing ward, including substantial M&E works, new flooring to all the wards, new doors, new counters and Kitchen units were also installed on the Joinery element of the works. New lay in grid Ceilings were installed along with specified LED Lighting upgrades and the whole ward was fully Decorated throughout.

This, in essence, was a monumental challenge for all involved, including the Architect, Consultants, the in-house NHS team, and, of course, the P&W site and Management team. The delivery of this project needed careful planning and completion of areas of the ward in a phased manner to ensure that all of the trades involved could access specific areas to complete their works. This was achieved for the most part due to thorough planning and due consideration given to all of the trades participating on the project.

Pacy & Wheatley have now delivered a modern, state-of-the-art facility for both Hospital patients and staff, completed in record time. Thanks must go to all involved for their dedication and application in ensuring we got over the line and completed this project. Many Thanks to both Adam Cox ( Site Manager ) along with Steve Shaw ( Project Manager ) and Charlotte Wheatley ( Project QS ) for their outstanding effort in delivering this project which was delivered with zero accidents which in itself is a testament to the planning and execution of the works.
