Retail Interior Fit-Outs

Pacy & Wheatley Interiors are a specialist contractor in the retail interior fit-outs sector.

Amongst the clients we work for regularly include Aldi and Lidl, and within the DIY sector, we work for Wickes. The Aldi and Lidl stores we work on are, for the most part, new store internal works where our scope of works includes installation of the in-store racking, suspended Ceiling installations where applicable as some stores do not have suspended Ceilings installed, Flooring and Plastering works are also involved within our package along with the installation of Kitchen units to the staff facility areas.

The works for both Aldi and Lidl are allocated on a fixed rate, and the stores we work with are mainly within an hour’s travelling time from our base in Doncaster.

Shop Fit-Out

Shop fit-outs are very demanding in terms of timescales and are typically completed in around 6 weeks. As Principal Contractors on these projects, we manage comprehensive shop fit-out services for Wickes stores, where, in the main, old displays of kitchens and bathrooms are stripped out and new ranges installed. Sometimes, displays are installed on a mezzanine first floor, contributing to logistical issues and requiring careful planning to remove old displays, display walls, flooring, and metalwork.

This is also an issue when it comes to deliveries of the new product displays. Sometimes, night shifts need to be planned to distribute display products and new flooring into the required areas once the stores are closed for the day.

As part of the work package for a typical Wickes fit-out, we generally spruce up the back-of-house staff facilities, where decorations, flooring, and new furniture are installed in both the canteen and restrooms. Toilet facilities are decorated, at minimum, but sometimes new sanitary ware is installed, obviously depending on the state of the existing. As the duties of a Principal Contractor, we also have a requirement to facilitate and manage Contractors directly employed by the client, mainly in the form of Signage and Racking contractors.

Wickes store fit-outs/refurbishments are particularly challenging as the stores are trading all the time whilst we are carrying out our work, meaning the need for on-site coordination and the daily managing of health and safety in regard to the general public and the fit-out team. Once completed, the transformation of the Wickes store is very impressive, especially with the new lighting installed and the new displays fully completed.

Frequently Asked Retail Fit-Out Questions

What is a retail fit-out?

A retail fit-out is the process of transforming an empty or outdated shop space into a fully functional retail environment. This includes layout planning, interior design, flooring, lighting, electrical work, fixtures, displays, and brand-led finishing touches.

How long does a retail fit-out take?

Project timescales vary depending on store size and the complexity of the design, but most retail fit-outs take between 4–12 weeks. A detailed timeline is usually provided after the design and planning stage.

Do you handle the entire fit-out process?

Yes. We provide a full turnkey service including design, planning, building works, joinery, electrical installations, plumbing, decoration, signage, and final finishing. We can manage every stage from concept to completion.

Can you work to my brand guidelines?

Absolutely. We ensure all materials, colours, layouts, and finishes reflect your brand identity and customer experience goals. We can work with existing brand guidelines or help you develop new ones.

Do you offer bespoke shopfitting solutions?

Yes. We build bespoke counters, shelving, displays, storage units, point-of-sale areas, and back-of-house solutions specific to your store layout and retail sector.

Can you complete fit-outs outside of trading hours?

Where required, we offer out-of-hours and phased installation to minimise disruption to your business. This is common for live retail environments that need to remain open.

Do you help with planning permission or building regulations?

Yes. We can advise on planning permission, building control requirements, fire safety compliance, and landlord approvals to ensure the project runs smoothly.

How much does a retail fit-out cost?

Costs vary depending on store size, design specification, materials, and mechanical/electrical needs. We provide detailed, itemised quotations after an initial site survey and design consultation.

    Nottingham University Hospitals, NHS Trust

Pacy & Wheatley Interiors were contacted in regard to getting involved in an urgent project to completely strip out and refurbish the Southwell Ward at Nottingham City Hospital. The brief to this project was that once commenced, this project needed to be completed in 12 weeks, a very tall undertaking based on the amount of work involved. However, after several meetings, a programme was put together which involved a large portion of the works being carried out on both days and nights, 6 days a week, in order to give all involved the best chance of completing the works to a very challenging timescale. The works undertaken involved the full strip out of the existing ward, including substantial M&E works, new flooring to all the wards, new doors, new counters and Kitchen units were also installed on the Joinery element of the works. New lay in grid Ceilings were installed along with specified LED Lighting upgrades and the whole ward was fully Decorated throughout.

This, in essence, was a monumental challenge for all involved, including the Architect, Consultants, the in-house NHS team, and, of course, the P&W site and Management team. The delivery of this project needed careful planning and completion of areas of the ward in a phased manner to ensure that all of the trades involved could access specific areas to complete their works. This was achieved for the most part due to thorough planning and due consideration given to all of the trades participating on the project.

Pacy & Wheatley have now delivered a modern, state-of-the-art facility for both Hospital patients and staff, completed in record time. Thanks must go to all involved for their dedication and application in ensuring we got over the line and completed this project. Many Thanks to both Adam Cox ( Site Manager ) along with Steve Shaw ( Project Manager ) and Charlotte Wheatley ( Project QS ) for their outstanding effort in delivering this project which was delivered with zero accidents which in itself is a testament to the planning and execution of the works.
