Pacy & Wheatley were delighted to be appointed as Principal Contractor by Nottingham City Hospital to deliver a state-of-the-art internal fit-out of their elective theatres.

This vital healthcare project will deliver three new advanced operating theatres alongside one dedicated training facility. To support these high-spec clinical environments, the project includes the installation of three new Air Handling Units (AHUs) housed within a purpose-built rooftop plant room. This advanced ventilation system ensures the facility meets the highest clinical standards, empowering medical staff to deliver first-class patient care.

The scope of works involves extensive internal construction across two floors, including installation of new internal partitions across two levels. Installation of mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems to the latest NHS specifications.

The Challenge

The primary obstacle of this project is the building's footprint. The structure is completely landlocked, built entirely within an enclosed central courtyard with no direct access from outside public areas. This tight, zero-enclosure environment presents major logistical hurdles for material delivery and waste removal, while presenting a high risk of public interface in a live hospital environment.

The Solution & Key Achievements

To overcome the landlocked constraints and eliminate safety risks to hospital staff and the public, Pacy & Wheatley implemented a strategic logistics plan utilising a tower crane to lift all construction materials directly over the existing structures into the courtyard space. This approach effectively isolated the construction zone, minimised the public interface, and maintained strict safety protocols across the live hospital site.

Key Achievement: PWI successfully delivered a state-of-the-art operating suite for the NHS, providing high-capacity, modern clinical spaces that allow the Trust to continue its vital healthcare work efficiently.

    Pacy & Wheatley Interiors were contacted in regard to getting involved in an urgent project to completely strip out and refurbish the Southwell Ward at Nottingham City Hospital. The brief to this project was that once commenced, this project needed to be completed in 12 weeks, a very tall undertaking based on the amount of work involved. However, after several meetings, a programme was put together which involved a large portion of the works being carried out on both days and nights, 6 days a week, in order to give all involved the best chance of completing the works to a very challenging timescale. The works undertaken involved the full strip out of the existing ward, including substantial M&E works, new flooring to all the wards, new doors, new counters and Kitchen units were also installed on the Joinery element of the works. New lay in grid Ceilings were installed along with specified LED Lighting upgrades and the whole ward was fully Decorated throughout.

    This, in essence, was a monumental challenge for all involved, including the Architect, Consultants, the in-house NHS team, and, of course, the P&W site and Management team. The delivery of this project needed careful planning and completion of areas of the ward in a phased manner to ensure that all of the trades involved could access specific areas to complete their works. This was achieved for the most part due to thorough planning and due consideration given to all of the trades participating on the project.

    Pacy & Wheatley have now delivered a modern, state-of-the-art facility for both Hospital patients and staff, completed in record time. Thanks must go to all involved for their dedication and application in ensuring we got over the line and completed this project. Many Thanks to both Adam Cox ( Site Manager ) along with Steve Shaw ( Project Manager ) and Charlotte Wheatley ( Project QS ) for their outstanding effort in delivering this project which was delivered with zero accidents which in itself is a testament to the planning and execution of the works.
