Do You Need to Close Your Business During a Fit Out?

Posted on 20 July 2026

If you're planning a commercial fit out, one of your biggest concerns is likely to be whether you'll need to close your business while the work takes place. For many organisations, even a short closure can lead to lost revenue, disruption for staff and inconvenience for customers.

The good news is that you don't always need to close your business during a fit out. Many commercial refurbishment projects can be completed while a business continues operating, provided the work is carefully planned and managed. Whether that's possible depends on the type of work being carried out, how your premises are used and the measures needed to keep everyone safe.

At Pacy & Wheatley Interiors, we deliver commercial interior projects across the UK for offices, retail spaces, hotels, restaurants, pubs, education settings and warehouses. We understand that minimising disruption is just as important as delivering a high-quality finish, so every project is planned around the way our clients operate.

Can You Stay Open During a Commercial Fit Out?

In many cases, yes.

A business doesn't automatically need to close because refurbishment work is taking place. With the right planning, it's often possible to complete a fit out while staff continue working and customers can still access unaffected areas.

Common ways this is achieved include:

  • Phased works, where one area is refurbished at a time while the rest of the building remains operational.
  • Out-of-hours working, with work completed during evenings, weekends or quieter periods.
  • Temporary segregation, using barriers or partitions to safely separate construction work from occupied spaces.

However, temporary closure may be the safest option if the project involves major structural alterations, essential service shutdowns, high levels of dust or noise, or work that affects emergency escape routes. Certain sectors, such as education or food service, may also have additional health and safety requirements that influence when work can take place.

An experienced interior contractor will assess these factors early in the planning process and recommend the most practical approach for your business.

How to Minimise Disruption During a Fit Out

The success of an occupied fit out comes down to planning rather than speed.

A well-managed project will coordinate trades, deliveries and installations so work progresses efficiently without creating unnecessary disruption. By sequencing works carefully and identifying potential challenges before they arise, many delays can be avoided.

It's also important to schedule the most disruptive activities, such as suspended ceiling installation, partitioning, electrical upgrades or joinery works, at times when they will have the least impact on your day-to-day operations.

Good communication throughout the project ensures staff know what to expect and helps your business continue operating as smoothly as possible.

How to Decide Whether You Should Close

Every project is different, so there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Before deciding whether to remain open, consider:

  • Will staff or customers need access to the areas being refurbished?
  • Will power, water or other essential services be interrupted?
  • Can the project be completed in phases?
  • Is evening or weekend working an option?
  • Are there any legal or industry-specific health and safety requirements?

Discussing these questions with your contractor before work begins will help you choose the safest and most practical approach while avoiding unnecessary disruption.

Why Early Planning Matters

The earlier you involve your interior contractor, the more flexibility there is to keep your business operating during the project.

Early planning allows time to develop a realistic programme, coordinate materials and trades, and schedule work around your busiest periods wherever possible. It also helps identify any potential risks before construction starts, reducing the likelihood of delays or unexpected interruptions.

Whether your fit out takes a few days or several weeks will depend on the size and complexity of the project, but a well-planned programme gives you the best chance of completing the work efficiently while maintaining business continuity.

    Nottingham University Hospitals, NHS Trust

Pacy & Wheatley Interiors were contacted in regard to getting involved in an urgent project to completely strip out and refurbish the Southwell Ward at Nottingham City Hospital. The brief to this project was that once commenced, this project needed to be completed in 12 weeks, a very tall undertaking based on the amount of work involved. However, after several meetings, a programme was put together which involved a large portion of the works being carried out on both days and nights, 6 days a week, in order to give all involved the best chance of completing the works to a very challenging timescale. The works undertaken involved the full strip out of the existing ward, including substantial M&E works, new flooring to all the wards, new doors, new counters and Kitchen units were also installed on the Joinery element of the works. New lay in grid Ceilings were installed along with specified LED Lighting upgrades and the whole ward was fully Decorated throughout.

This, in essence, was a monumental challenge for all involved, including the Architect, Consultants, the in-house NHS team, and, of course, the P&W site and Management team. The delivery of this project needed careful planning and completion of areas of the ward in a phased manner to ensure that all of the trades involved could access specific areas to complete their works. This was achieved for the most part due to thorough planning and due consideration given to all of the trades participating on the project.

Pacy & Wheatley have now delivered a modern, state-of-the-art facility for both Hospital patients and staff, completed in record time. Thanks must go to all involved for their dedication and application in ensuring we got over the line and completed this project. Many Thanks to both Adam Cox ( Site Manager ) along with Steve Shaw ( Project Manager ) and Charlotte Wheatley ( Project QS ) for their outstanding effort in delivering this project which was delivered with zero accidents which in itself is a testament to the planning and execution of the works.
