The Project
Pacy & Wheatley Interiors successfully completed the comprehensive upgrade of the CT5 at Nottingham City Hospital. This complex project was dual phased, involving the construction of a new, dedicated Air Handling Unit plant room, followed by the complete refurbishment and modernisation of the existing CT treatment room to accommodate a new, advanced CT scanner. The refurbishment included new flooring, decoration, joinery works, ceilings, electrical and mechanical works. The new build included new foundations, block and brick, steel, louvres, steel doors, fencing and roofing.
The Challenge
As the project took place within a live hospital building, strict controls were paramount to ensure the safety and comfort of patients and staff. We implemented comprehensive hoarding to completely segregate the worksite from the public, mitigating dust, noise, and vibration transfer. The core challenge lay in managing significant structural and mechanical installations—including the new external plant room structure and deep foundation work—within an extremely constrained, live hospital environment, demanding precise control over site logistics and noise pollution.
The external location selected for the new AHU plant room presented immediate logistical difficulties, characterised by an exceptionally tight footprint for vehicle manoeuvring and material offloading.
A meticulous, 'just-in-time' delivery schedule was implemented, minimising the amount of material stored on-site. Deliveries were staggered and coordinated with small, specialised delivery vehicles where necessary. All heavy transfers were pre-approved, ensuring zero impact on emergency routes and adjacent hospital function.
